This is Aunty Cissy
This is a photo of Aunty Cissy and Uncle Jess with grandma and granddad Armstrong and Matthew James McNally. Matthew was born in 1972 so it must be year or two after this. They lived in a house with garden and a well in Holywell, North Wales.
My sisters remember visitng them and we had lots of speculation about what their real names were. I have now found out that Cissy was grandma Armstrong's aunt, the youngest sister of her mother, Laura Ann Ashman. Cissy's real name was Rachel Ashman, she was born in 1897 in Manchester. The family had moved from Morley, Yorkshire just a short time earlier. She married Jasper Craigie in 1918. Her sister Mary married Jasper's brother William in 1920.

ReplyDeletesorry i meant 1871.
James richard ashman & mary ann were the parents names. The family are in the 1871 census in north yorkshire .I believe Mary Ann died about 1874
and the family split up .The oldest 2 boys James
& Daniel went to work around Morley . The other childen ended up in Salford in the care of James
& Mary Gough. The father James R Ashman also lived
morley until he died about 1883

Hello Colin, this is very interesting. I am stuck with the Ashmans as I can't find anything before the 1891 census when he is married to Rachel Almond from Morley. His daughter Laura Ann Ashman was my grandmother's mother and we have lots of photos of her. Please get in touch, helenbarcelona@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime I will work on the leads you have given me. Helen
